Converting a standard Motorola G to Motorola G Google Play Edition

The Motorola G is a nice simple phone provided by Motorola with minimal bloatware added to the system compared to some other manufacturers (Samsung). However, the Moto G Google Play Edition is a pure Android experience and gets updated to the latest version of Android much sooner than Motorola provides updates.

The Google Play Store no longer sells Google Play Editions of the Motorola G, or HTC One m8 or Samsung S4 Galaxy for that matter. However, it is possible to convert most versions of the Moto G (2013 and 2014) versions to the Google Play Edition. The exception are the dual SIM variants, with those, only the first SIM card will work.

Generally, converting a device to a Google Play Edition takes time and is not guaranteed to work, however a very nice gentleman has created a great little program that takes out all the guess work of converting a Moto G to Google Play Edition.

Be warned, this does have the potential to make your phone unusable. Do this at your own risk!

You will need to download the following software to make the change

  1. The MotoTool AIO available from MotoTool AIO Mirror (File size is around 55 Mb)

  2. The Google Play 4.4.2 (KitKat) image available from GPE Image (File size is around 458Mb)

Also, you will need to unlock the boot loader of the phone – see the Unlocking Moto G Boot Loader entry

One you have downloaded the files, your phone can be updated by following these instructions:

  1. Unzip the MotoToolAioV3.zip to whichever folder works for you – C:\Temp

  2. Unzip the GPE_XT1032_KOT49H.M004_CFC.xml.zip and extract the contents to the \GpeImage subfolder

  3. Turn your Moto G off

  5. Connect the phone to your PC and wait for the driver installation to start

  6. Run the MotoTool AIO

10.Once your phone has rebooted after updating to Android 4.4.4, go to Settings, then About Phone, then System updates and Check for updates, this will update your phone to Android 5.0.1
